Personal Project; Swimming Clinic 2013
At the end of my sophomore year, I decided to challenge myself to complete a personal project. As someone who has been swimming for almost 10 years, I wanted to host a swimming clinic for my school. I knew many middle school students in our GSIS community didn't know how to swim, but they wanted to learn the basics. Also, others wanted to improve their skills and to get in shape for the next Varsity Swimming season. I gathered these students and organized a series of group sessions in our school pool. I gave them tips on drills and individual lessons on specific techniques such as flip-turns. Instruction was individually tailored to meet each of the participants' needs.
Through my experience with running this swimming clinic, I learned of the challenges of leading and teaching a group. By planning, organizing and carrying out the whole clinic by myself, I gained hands-on experience on the reality of handling a complex project. Although I had my difficulties with running such a clinic for the first time in my life, the final outcome was great and my students were happy with the help that I had given them. I am now more confident with creating and operating my own projects, and I am certain that with more experience that this confidence will grow even further.
This is why I am sharing this experience of mine with you. I encourage you to try what I did, and create a project or host an event of your own. You'll be surprised to see what you can actually achieve!
